Dynamic Formula Evaluation in Salesforce
Salesforce releases a new feature Dynamic Formula Evaluation as Developer Preview in Summer 24. This feature helps developers and administrators to create and assess formula expressions in real time based on how Salesforce’s data or context changes.

Why We Need Dynamic Formula Evaluation in Salesforce
Flexibility: Dynamic Formula Evaluation enables the instantaneous creation and assessment of formulas. This is especially helpful in situations where dynamic formula expression generation or modification is required in response to user inputs or runtime data modifications.
Efficiency in Business Processes: Rather than hard-coding multiple scenarios, dynamic formulas allow you to handle complex business logic that is highly specific to specific situations or changes frequently. For example, computing taxation or discounts that could change over time, depending on the product or the customer’s location.
Customization: Since formulas can be modified and carried out depending on the state of the data at any given time or under certain circumstances during a Flow, an Apex transaction, or when utilizing APIs, it allows for a high degree of customization.
Reduced Complexity: Dynamic formulas break down the logic into manageable, reusable formula expressions that can adapt as needed, saving the creation of multiple fields with static formulas or writing large custom code to handle variable conditions.
Reusability Across Different Applications: A single dynamic formula can be used in Flow Builder, Process Builder, and Apex classes, among other Salesforce components and applications. Reusing materials can save maintenance expenses and increase process uniformity throughout the company.
Use Cases for Dynamic Formula Evaluation
- Validation Rules: By using complex, multi-variable conditions that are not predictable in advance, dynamic formulas can be used to validate data entries in real-time.
- Custom Flow Logic: In Salesforce Flows, dynamic formulas that rely on data that is only accessible at runtime — like user selections or information retrieved from outside sources — can decide paths or actions.
- Complex Apex Calculations: Rather than hard-coding logic in Apex, developers can use dynamic formulas to carry out calculations, which results in cleaner, easier-to-maintain code.
- APIs for External Integration: To ensure that data complies with Salesforce’s and the external system’s requirements, dynamic formulas can be used to compute values that need to be sent to or received from other systems when integrating with external systems.
Summary
Dynamic Formula Evaluation is increasingly important as Salesforce environments become more customized and data-driven, necessitating more adaptable and sophisticated solutions to handle complex business logic and data validation scenarios. This feature enables developers and administrators to create more dynamic, responsive, and efficient applications within the Salesforce ecosystem.
